New York City Urban Debate League Diversity Pipeline Project
Each month, the NYCUDL and our Community Partners organize debate invitationals in addition to the regular New York City Urban Debate League tournaments. These events, sponsored and hosted by community partners, provide students with the opportunity to experience a professional work setting, interact with professionals, attend career panels or workshops, participate in speed networking, and debate and be critiqued in front of a panel of professionals.
The Beveridge & Diamond Invitational
Beveridge & Diamond is a law firm that specializes in environmental law which provides a unique opportunity for our students to debate environmental issues in front of top experts in environmental law and policymaking.
The Bank of America Invitational
We have partnered with Bank of America since 2015 to provide a unique opportunity for some of our rising stars to gain exposure to the business world, experience Bank of America’s beautiful headquarters, and to meet amazing professionals at Bank of America.
The Citi Debate Championships
We have partnered with Citi each year to sponsor and host the “Citi High School Debate Championships” which is the culminating citywide event for high school students. Additionally, Citi opens up their corporate headquarters at the end of the year for our Annual Awards Dinner for our top high school debaters.
The Macquaire Invitational
We met several former debaters who now work at the financial firm of Macquaire and we have been partnered since. Each year our debaters have a unique opportunity to meet with former debaters who now work in finance, learn about careers in finance, and participate in a debate night at Macquaire.
The Kirkland & Ellis Invitational & National Qualifier
Kirkland and Ellis is one of the top litigation firms in the country and many of their lawyers were former college and high school debaters. Our debaters have the opportunity to spend an evening with attorneys over dinner to discuss legal careers, college questions, and everything debate! The Kirkland & Ellis Invitational also is the last tournament of the year to decide on the two teams representing New York City at the National Association of Urban Debate League’s National Championship which is held in different cities each year including California at the University of Southern California, Washington D.C., and Chicago. The Invitational also decides our top two high school public forum debate teams to receive full scholarships to compete in the National Debate Coaches Association National Championships which is also held in a different city each year.
The Brown Rudnick Invitational
Brown Rudnick is the sponsor of the Brown Rudnick Travel Team and host of the Brown Rudnick Invitational. Brown Rudnick was one of the first supporters of the New York City Urban Debate League when it was started at just one school in the South Bronx at the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice. In 2011, Brown Rudnick made it possible to replicate that program to all schools in the city by being one of the first sponsors of the New York City Urban Debate League and building the city’s first debate league for all schools. Beginning in 2011 and every year since, Brown Rudnick has generously supported the NYCUDL and our mission that every school should have a debate team and every student access to the best debate education opportunities. Today, Brown Rudnick sponsors our Travel Team so that there is no glass ceiling on NYC debaters and our students have the opportunity to compete at Yale, Harvard, Georgetown and other monthly travel tournaments.
