The History of Bronx Debate

The Bronx has had an incredible history of Great Debaters including the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice, Sonya Sotomayor who started her legal career as a high school debater at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx. Her debate coach encouraged her to pursue a career in law and the rest is history!  Today, the Bronx is home to some of the top debate programs in the city and country from the Bronx High School of Science to the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice! Bronx debaters have consistently ranked among the top in the nation. Click here to see our Bronx Debaters visit the White House to accept the White House Youth Award for our debate league being one of the top debate leagues in the nation. The New York City Urban Debate League was founded in the South Bronx at a single school. Click here for our news archive where we started in a single classroom in the early 2000s!

A fixture in the Fordham section of the Bronx since 1967, the Monroe College Bronx campus provides students with a wide array of educational experiences. With its seven buildings, Monroe College’s Bronx campus is an important part of one of the borough’s most well-known areas. The Fordham shopping district, made up of over 300 local and nationwide businesses, contributes to the vitality of Bronx campus life. The debate institute has the opportunity to take advantage of the rich academics of Monroe College including police training and criminal justice simulations.  The School of Criminal Justice was founded in 2003 in response to the September 11th attacks. Monroe College recognized the need for highly trained criminal justice professionals at the local, state and federal levels. Debaters will have the opportunity to network with the college faculty, students, debaters and the School of Criminal Justice.
